I come down from the Tomlins of Northern Kentucky. This family originates with Rev. Christian Tomlin of Culpepper County, Virginia. He came to Northern Kentucky and settled in Pendleton County around 1817 and was a Baptist preacher. He had a brother that settled in Brown or Clermont County, Ohio around the same time.
Since then, Christian's descendants have settled in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and who knows where else.
His children were:

Noticed your comment re your father being born in Warren, TN. My father was born in Warren in 1898 along with brothers Ebert 1902, Imogene 1905, Lurline 1908, Fred 1912, and Noreen in 1918. Also Cora although I have no birthdate for her. I believe all were born in Warren although I am sure of only my dad, so we know there was at least another Tomlin family in Warren around the turn of the century. My grandfather was Benjamin Tomlin b 1859 who married Nancy Tomerlin. |

Hello all you Tomlin's out there. Like many of you, I was surfing, hoping to find out more about my family roots. I'm African American and the only Tomlin relative's I've known grew up in my household. As a 9 yr old, I visited Phildelphia and saw a Bishop Tomlin's name on the charter of the oldest church in the US. I've been looking for more info ever since. Pinky Tomlin - cont: He fell back on his collegiate interest in geology, and soon became an oilman. His philosophy: "There are only three essentials: work to do, someone to love, and something to hope for." Pinky Tomlin's biography, appropriately titled "The Object of My Affection," was published in 1981.
A few other Tomlins are scattered about VA in Richmond, Staunton, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake, but I don't know if their family branches are related to ours.

Truman "Pinky" Tomlin (so called because his pale hair and fair complexion sunburned easily) was born in Eros, Arkansas but grew up on a farm in Durant, Oklahoma. A boyhood fascination with music soon gave him a reputation as a good banjoist -- at 16 he was hired by Louis Armstrong for a riverboat gig -- and Tomlin soon gravitated toward the guitar. He came to national attention when he personally introduced his original song, "The Object of My Affection." His disarming, easygoing style and his lean, bespectacled looks belied a shrewd business instinct and an extensive education in music, law, and geology. He earned featured roles in movies, as well as starring roles in four pleasant, low-budget features for Melody Pictures. Greetings to All Tomlins - Part 2
My father's younger brother, Vance L. Tomlin, lives in Mandeville, LA. His four sons, Vance L. Jr., Robert, William, and Richard and their families live in Lousiana and Texas. Other Tomlins live in Fayetteville, TN, (near Warren, TN) who were children of my grandfather's cousin, Troy "T.W." Tomlin, an attorney. Tomlin remains an uncommon name anywhere I have ever lived. While growing up in New Orleans, the only other Tomlins in the city were my uncle and his sons.
A second cousin of my father's, Pinky Tomlin, was a musician, actor, and singer during the Big Band era of the 1930's-40's. I have seen a couple of his films and the family resemblence remained strong. The following information about Pinky Tomlin was copied from a web site. (See Part 3) |

Greetings to all Tomlins! Part 1
My family's branch of Tomlins were originally from England. Family stories vary somewhat, and some members place the family as originally from Wales and some from Cornwall, England. My father told me that members of the Tomlin family had fought in England with Oliver Cromwell in 1642 and that the family line could be traced back to the time of the Norman Conquest in England in 1066. The Tomlins from my family branch settled in the Richmond and Williamsburg areas of Virginia in the mid 1600's and moved to West Tennessee in the late 1600's. My grandfather, William L. Tomlin, was born in Warren, Tennessee (near Memphis, TN) around 1870. My father, Aubrey L. Tomlin, was his oldest son and was born in Warren, TN in 1912. The family men were generally gentleman farmers, but also included lawyers, including my father who was an attorney and later became a Federal Law Judge in Atlanta, GA.

It's nice to see other Tomlins out there, my family hasn't been here for even a century, through research have found Tomlins spread out all over the counry even though it is not that common of a name. My maiden name is Tomlin. My dad's family originally ( from what I know) came to the US from Wales. That was before the civil war. The middle name of every first born son (?) has been Wayne for generations. When I asked where "Wayne" came from, my dad said something about a watch company.
My dad's family (possibly his great grandparents or grand parents as he was born in 1913) traveled from Virginia on the last wagon train going down the Appalation Trail and settled in Alabama. My dad grew up in Dothan, Alabama.
Thoes are just bits and pieces of some of the stuff my dad has passed on. As a family in our branch of the Tomlins, we are fairly disengaged from each other so it was nice to be able to find a Tomlin web site which offered a way to connect to other Tomlins (blood related or not!). Thanks! |

I have been researching my family tree for the past year and have traced my roots back to a John Tomlin of Enstone Oxford England born in c1726. THe surname was often recorded as Tomlin (without the 'a') as few could spell or write in those days. The family stayed mainly in Oxfordshire and Berkshire England until the end of the 19th century and were centered on the Henley-on-Thames and Reading areas.
It seems the name started to be spelled with an 'a' around the beginning of the 1800's but I am sure there must have been some branches of the family that continued to spell the surname as Tomlin.
If anyone can trace their ancestors back to Oxfordshire in England I would be pleased to hear from them.

Recently, I have taken up a hobby, antfarm eating.

We are compiling a Tomlin family geneology and would appreciate any information on Tomlin family originally from southern Ohio/ northern Kentucky. The family moved to Oregon in about 1908 and then to California in 1925.
My father was Lloyd J. Tomlin, born 1898 in Wilmington, Ohio. Died 1972 in Long Beach, Calif. He married Amelia Maier in 1925.
Lloyd's father was Frank Barnes Tomlin. Born 1863. Died 1953 in Calif. He married Altia Morris of Ohio.
Frank's father was Andrew Jackson Tomlin. He died in Lake Oswego, Oregon in 1914. He married Elizabeth McKenzie.

Thank you so much for putting up the driver's license info! I've been driving for 13 years and lived (and taken driver's tests) in Texas, Indiana, Georgia, Michigan, Illinois, and Virginia. This has got to be the most bizarre license test I've ever taken.
Some of the "correct" answers on the motorcycle exam could endanger your life if followed.
As a precaution, I studied their entire Driver's handbook, but still failed both the motorcycle and driver's exam. I will be spending the weekend memorizing inane facts about driver's license points, alcohol, the number of months suspension for each infaction, and your test questions in hopes of passing on Monday.

Father- David L. Tomlin-Waycross, Ga.
Grandfather- Ruben Tomlin-Waycross, Ga. BUT family is thought to be from the New Jersey area and he was married to a Jessie Jeffords of Waycross, Ga.

Hello! I came across your set theory website tonight as I was studying for my theory comp for my BME. I could not get it to work properly, though. :( Anyway, I did like the way you find the prime form. We were taught that this is called the "source set" and learned how to do it in a much harder way! You have taught me to do it much faster and I appreciate it! Your theory geek list is hilarious! Please email me if you have any ideas as to why I can't get the calculator to work!

Howdy! Just stoppin' by. Murphy is ADORABLE! Just checking out the wedding pix. T-minus 2.5 months until my "Big Day" (tm). I've hired the choir and chosen some fab music. My matron of honor will be singing Mozart's Laudate Dominum. Still with PG&E National Energy Group. Fun, fun! I might be auditioning for the Master's Chorale here in August (the former Paul Hill Chorale). We'll see how that goes. Otherwise pretty boring. Hope you, Beth, and the animules are doing well!
